Ok, we all know to call the power company with a gas leak, but what are the options when they arrive?
First they “sniff” the exterior gas lines with a multi thousand dollar piece of equipment, then all the interior ones. If a leak is found they’re obligated to either fix it or isolate it.
On a recent inspection, it took over twenty minutes of searching, but they found the leak at the inlet valve to the hot water heater, and isolated the unit.
If you’re purchasing a home and this happens on an inspection, make sure the power company is called immediately, and make sure you see them arrive. If this doesn’t happen, you and all present are liable for not notifying other persons who may be potentially harmed later.
